I loved the FIRST four character sketches, which took me up to page 72. But actually, at the time, I did not know that, because they were more like a collection of short stories. In the Roots sections (by far the only section of good writing) it features the 9 characters who are going to be in the story. He has it divided in a Table of Contents with 4 "sections": Roots, Trunk, Crown, Seeds. Was I taken in THAT easily? OMG! I hate myself. Okay, I need to settle myself and possibly HELP the next innocent victim of this mess. I'm SO irritated right now at devoting myself to this 502 page tome of overwritten, sexist, tedious, talking-out-of-your-ass, crap! I love trees, and I'm sorry so many were cut down to fill this book that was 300 pages too long! Powers - I don't feel one bit guilty over telling you that somehow your overrated writing has made it to the big leagues (at least according to Pulitzer). Once again I'll ask, who ARE you people on the PP committee? Is this a case of "feel-good theme" winning out over an actual story and actual writing ? And who is this "Richard Powers"? Mr.
